How to Deal with Social Media Overwhelm as a Small Business
Listen to the episode on Spotify or Apple Podcasts
Is the constant pressure of maintaining a social media presence and online marketing strategy causing overwhelm? This episode offers practical steps for simplifying your approach and making social media and online marketing work for you.
Quote from this episode:
We are in a visibility economy.
The more visible you are, the more people remember you when opportunities come up. The more people realize that ‘oh my friend does this, I should recommend them’.
If you don't take advantage of this, it means you're missing out on opportunities; it means you're missing out on sales, and you're leaving your brand up to chance.
The opposite of this [leaving your brand up to chance] is that you're deliberately fueling a narrative that you want people to believe in about who you are.
#1. Understanding the Overwhelm
Constant change in algorithms and platforms
Feeling pressure to be on every platform
Not knowing where to start
Fear of doing it wrong
Unfortunately, we can’t quite ignore social media- our buyers are there. You can however pick the 1 or 2 where your true economic buyers (the ones who sign the cheques) are on.
#2 Taking Control of Social Media
Focus on the benefits:
Building brand awareness
Connecting with customers directly
Driving sales and leads
Start small and achievable:
Choose 1-2 platforms most relevant to your target audience
Set realistic goals (e.g., post 2-3 times a week)
Content is King (or Queen!):
Focus on creating valuable content that resonates with your audience
Examples: Tips, industry insights, behind-the-scenes glimpses
#3. Making it Manageable: Tools and Strategies
Free and paid tools to help with scheduling, content creation, and analytics
Meta’s business suite has some incredible suites to help you manage and schedule content in advance. You can also review the analytics to see what content is doing great.
Later is an app that you can pay for to schedule future posts.
Importance of repurposing content across platforms
As important as repurposing your content is - which means sharing the same content on multiple platforms so the same work goes further- it’s important to pace yourself. Stick with learning one platform your ideal customers are active on and as you master one (or hire help), expand to others.
Batching content creation sessions to save time
Scheduling tools to automate posting
#4. Finding Your Voice and Building a Community
Authenticity is key: Let your brand personality (or your personality if you are a solopreneur) shine through
Engage with your audience: Respond to comments and messages
Building a community fosters loyalty and advocacy
Highlight customer stories and testimonials
Remember, it's a marathon, not a sprint: Be patient and consistent
Focus on progress, not perfection
